Every child deserves a chance at a bright future. But the fact is that millions face a disadvantage in school because they lack proper nutrition. We see this as a an opportunity for a company, founded in 1894 with a promise to help children thrive. We’re keeping that promise through Nourishing Minds - providing not just access to nutrition, but also innovating new products and sustainable food systems. These give us more ways to keep children nourished, because they can’t fill their minds when their stomachs are empty.
Since 2015, The Hershey Company has been providing Vivi, a highly-fortified groundnut-based nutritional supplement, to children during the school day. The project, implemented in partnership with the Ghana School Feeding Program, is focused on improving nutrition for students, increasing school enrollment, attendance and retention, and boosting domestic food production.
Early results from an independent impact study conducted by the University of Ghana are encouraging. Students who received ViVi show less anemia, and improved height and weight. Additional research will be conducted to better understand the specific contributions the program is making to changes in nutrition and educational performance.
